DILEMMA COACHING

Dilemma coaching is a short but powerful tool for handling a problem which you need to resolve. From a neuroscience perspective, a dilemma means that we have various mental maps in conflict, which have competing values or demands for resources. The brain has not yet worked out how to resolve the conflict by creating a new meta-map, by reconfiguring our existing maps.

The most effective way to resolve a dilemma is to have coaching in which you are encouraged to have an insight.  There are specific steps taken to help you move from impasse to insight:

  • Identification of the dilemma in a short distinct sentence – i.e. Awareness.

  • Reflection of the issue. During this period you will be asked vision, thinking, reappraisal, labelling, mindfulness, planning and action questions which will help you to be in a ‘toward state’ rather than allowing you to get caught up in the problem, drama, reasons or excuses about the issue.

  • As an insight occurs, the brain gives off strong gamma-band waves, which represent the creation of a new map – a new idea emerging into conscious awareness.

  • Once you have an insight, a cocktail of neurochemicals rushes through the brain making you feel motivated and ready for It is very important to use this motivation to take action or commit to taking action as quickly as possible. This will help to further embed the insight.

  • Developing new habits is an important part of the coaching process.
